My trip to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson came on September 24, 2011, when the Jackson State Tigers hosted the Alabama State Hornets in a SWAC matchup. Jackson State came into the game 3-0, and Alabama State was 2-1.

The Game
Neither team scored in the first quarter, and the game was tied 7-7 at halftime. Alabama State took control in the third quarter, scoring twice to go up 21-7. Jackson State answered with a touchdown in the fourth quarter but could not find the tying score, and the Hornets held on for a 21-14 win in front of 16,286 fans.
The stat sheet made it look like Jackson State should have won. The Tigers outgained the Hornets 489 yards to 227, and quarterback Casey Therriault threw for 410 yards and two touchdowns, both to Marcellos Wilder, who caught 10 passes for 146 yards. The problem was turnovers. Therriault threw six interceptions, and Alabama State made the most of them.
For the Hornets, quarterback Greg Jenkins threw for 147 yards and ran for 57 more and a touchdown. It was Jackson State’s first loss of the season.
Both teams went on to strong seasons. Jackson State finished 9-2, and Alabama State went 8-3 and shared the SWAC East Division title.
Seats and Tickets
Seating for this game was general admission, and I paid $20 for my seat.
Overall Game Day Experience
I would give Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium a 7 out of 10.
