Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum

My visit to Johnson Coliseum was for a matchup between the Bearkats of Sam Houston State University and the Hornets of Alabama State University. This is a venue and campus that I had on my list to visit but never found the time to make it happen. This matchup not only occurred at a time that was perfect for my schedule but it also featured my Alma Mater Alabama State University.

Here are my thoughts on Johnson Coliseum

Johnson Coliseum

Pros

Johnson Coliseum has a great view when walking in the arena. The placement of the entrance in relation to the court gives the fans a great view of the action immediately. Although the Bearkats are not a known national power in basketball, they have their history on full display around the arena. The pep squad is very lively in the arena and have entertainment for all fans throughout the game. They made sure there was not a dull moment within the arena.

The ticket pricing is very reasonable for their games as tickets are as low as $15 at any given home game. The concession prices are inexpensive but they only had two open at this particular game. Also, the parking options are plentiful and free so you will definitely save a lot of time and money upon arrival at Johnson Coliseum.

Cons

The biggest thing that stood out to me regarding this venue was the amount of fan support for the program. It was a non-conference game against an opponent that they were playing for only the third time in school history so the excitement to attend was not there.

Although the fan support in total was not there it didn’t have an impact on the game. There could have been more concession areas open for the game and maybe there are on other nights. They only had two open so you had to do a lot of walking just for a snack of choice. The lower seat in the upper area have some obstruction due to the rails above the lower level.

Overall Game Day Experience

I would give Johnson Coliseum a 7 out of 10. It has some great views upon walking in and economical pricing for tickets, concessions and parking. They have a great pep squad that keeps the fans in attendance entertained. They have limited fan support in numbers but the individuals there will keep you engaged.

If you ever find yourself in the Huntsville, TX area, I’d recommend making a quick stop by Sam Houston State University to check out Johnson Coliseum.

Hi, I'm Wesley, and I experienced my first major sporting event when I was 14 years old. Now as an adult on my own, over the last 4 years and 54 venues later, my ambition to attend a game at every MLB, NBA and NFL venue has only grown and the list of venues I want to visit longer.
